Epidural Steroid Injections

Epidural Steroid Injections At Pain Management Services

An epidural steroid injection is a minimally invasive non-surgical procedure that delivers pain-killing medication into a small space in your back or neck. The effects of an epidural steroid injection can vary greatly from person to person. The epidural steroid injection is an extremely safe medical procedure. This is just one of the pain control options available at Pain Management Services.

Epidural Steroid Injections And How They Can Help

Epidural steroid injections are commonly used to treat nerves in the spine that have become irritated. While most patients experience significant relief, the duration of that relief can vary. Common conditions treated with Epidural Steroid Injections include:

  • Herniated disc
  • Pinched nerve
  • Spinal stenosis (spinal narrowing)

This treatment is particularly effective for pain in the arm or legs caused by herniated discs. The procedure itself is quite safe. Relief usually sets in within a few days of the procedure but can occur sooner.

We offer sedation for the procedure for those who wish to have it, but the procedures usually cause a mild to moderate amount of discomfort for a few minutes. Discuss sedation with your physician for further details.

The procedure itself is fairly straightforward. It begins with you lying face down on the treatment table. A small patch of your skin will be cleaned and sterilized prior to administering numbing medication. An x-ray machine is then used to aid your physician in guiding the needle to the proper position for treatment. A contrast dye will then be injected to confirm the needle is where it should be to administer the medication effectively. Once confirmed, the medication will be injected.

The epidural steroid injection procedure is typically a very brief procedure, taking approximately 5 minutes. While some patients may experience some degree of pain, most report having little discomfort during the procedure. You will be monitored for approximately 20 minutes after the injection to ensure no problems are indicated. At this point, you will be ready to schedule a follow-up appointment and be discharged to home.
